Slang:
Blue or bluey, Viagra's chemical name is sildenafil citrate.
- Viagra is a pharmaceutical product
used for treating erectile dysfunction (or impotence) in men.
- It is a blue, diamond-shaped pill,
manufactured by the pharmaceutical company, Pfizer.
- Viagra pills are available in
doses of 25-mg, 50-mg or 100-mg.
- In the United States, the
availability of Viagra on the NHS is limited to men with certain
causes of erectile dysfunction, particularly those of a physical
nature. There is currently much debate over the issue, however,
as many health experts claim it is not possible to discriminate
between the different causes of impotence when making decisions
about the availability of treatments. A review of government
policy on this matter is expected soon.
- If you do not qualify for Viagra
on the NHS, you can ask your GP to refer you to a private clinic
or BUPA hospital where the provision of the drug is less
restricted. It is not free, however, and only prescribed
following a consultation.
- While Viagra is available from the
USA, and can be purchased over the internet, health experts
strenuously advise against using the drug without first
undergoing a professional medical consultation.
The Risks
- Some users have reported mild
side-effects such as headaches, flushed skin, upset stomach and
temporary changes in colour vision.
- Men who take nitroglycerin or
other drugs containing nitrates used in the treatment of
hypertension are advised not to take Viagra. This is because
blood pressure could suddenly drop to unsafe levels, causing
faintness or even blackout.
- Be aware that nitrates are also
found in amyl nitrates or nitrite (poppers).
- It is not advisable to use Viagra
if you suffer heart, kidney, liver or blood problems.
- The long term effects of Viagra
misuse (taking too much or taking it even though you don't
suffer from impotence) are still not fully understood.
- Like any drug, taking Viagra
regularly over a long period of time could lead to psychological
dependency problems. This could mean users find they are unable
to achieve an erection without using Viagra.
The Law:
- Viagra is legal in the United States,
but free circulation is restricted on the NHS to those with
severe erectile dysfunction.
If you are planning on taking Viagra note the facts:
- Viagra is not an aphrodisiac. It
doesn't increase sexual desire, or make a normal erection
harder. It is a medical aid for helping men with erection
difficulties.
- Viagra works by prolonging the
effects of a naturally occurring chemical in the penis called
cyclic GMP - which is responsible for erections.
- Doctors recommend impotence
sufferers take Viagra one hour before sex.
- The intensity of the effects
depends upon the dosage taken and the degree of sexual
stimulation. Users have reported that the effects tend to kick
in after 30 minutes, and can last up to 4 hours.
Advice and support:
- Consult your GP, they can help you
with any health problems and arrange counseling sessions to help
you deal with erectile dysfunction.
